Seniors Alliance Group

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014

The Rawdon Hills Health Centre Association, along with the hall associations of the

following community halls, Upper Nine Mile River, East Gore, Rawdon Gold Mines

Seniors Hall, and Kennetcook have joined together to form the Seniors Alliance Group.

This came about due to common concerns about the lack of programs and services for the

senior population living within our rural communities.

After a few meetings, the name of the Seniors Alliance Group was chosen, as we are

aligning the seniors from the area of the County of East Hants referred to as Hants North.

This area is home to 42 small rural communities! We then began to align our group with

other organizations servicing the senior population in Hants County such as the Hants

County Senior Safety Program and the R.C.M.P. It was felt that the best way to hold

this cafe would be to travel between the four community halls, therefore, it would be in

operation on a weekly basis and rotate through each community one day per month. From

there with our wonderful volunteers produced a poster, ad and questionnaire have been

The aim of this cafe is to provide senior citizens living within the Hants North area a

venue to which they can attend weekly that would provide a casual cafe atmosphere

where they can gather to have coffee/tea/muffins etc. Enjoy visiting with old friends and

make new acquaintances; play games such as cards, board games, washer toss, carpet

bowling to name few; have guest speakers covering topics of concern and interest to this

population group.

Behind the scenes, we have applied for a grant from the New Horizons for Seniors

Program, as well to the Tim Horton’s Courtesy Bus, through the Community Health

Centre and have received from the Board of the Rawdon Hills CHC a small start up

budget so that we could begin this traveling cafe in June to gather information and input

from the participants – making this "their cafe". So our pilot began on June 5th in Upper

Nine Mile River and is making its rounds through all four community halls. At each

location we are asking first time users to complete a questionnaire with regards to what

they would like to have at their cafe – such as guest speakers, games etc. Also, we are

running a Name the Cafe contest, each participant is given a ballot to submit and all of

the suggested names. The names will be presented to the participants so that they can

vote on their name.

The information and suggestions obtained from the questionnaires has been quite

valuable. Not only will this determine the workings of the cafe, but it also gives us

information and guidelines which we can use when applying for grants and programs

in the future for this group. One very common request is to have access to bus tours,

and many good suggestions have been made as to where to take a bus tour. OF NOTE:

the participants have also indicated that they would like to have name tags – like a

membership card!! The organizers feel this is a wonderful idea and when the cafe name

has been chosen, we will make up name tags with the cafe and members names!!!!!

Attendance at each site has been great, with a number of people following the cafe from

hall to hall. We have a very enthusiastic group gathering and at our third cafe in East

Gore Hall, we put forth a challenge to those in attendance to take an invitation and extend

it to others that have not been to a cafe yet.

Most certainly, we would expect this program to grow in popularity – more so that the

seniors participating have a sense of ownership as this is their cafe – therefore games,

speakers, activities etc. will all be driven by their suggestions and our abilities to fulfill

those requests.

Cafe Schedule:

First Thursday of the month: Upper Nine Mile River Community Hall

Second Thursday of the month: Kennetcook Fire Hall

Third Thursday of the month: East Gore Community Hall

Fourth Thursday of the month: Rawdon Gold Mines, Seniors Hall

If this cafe is something that would be of interest to you, please drop by and join your

neighbours and friends. Also, if you have a parent, grandparent, neighbour or family

friend who would benefit from a social outing such as this, please take an invitation

(below) and pass this along!!
